Urban Food Systems: Urban Gardening in Basel

How we as citizens can contribute to a resilient and circular food system in the city of Basel

According to the Ellen MacArthur Foundation, 80% of food will be consumed in cities by 2050. By sourcing regenerative and locally produced food, cities can use their public and private governance power to encourage a shift to regenerative food production.

Through regenerative food production, people in cities can shift from a degrading to a resilient model. This has the capacity to restore the health of our ecosystems, increasing resilience and biodiversity. People can thus also increase the resilience of their food supply by growing their own food and sourcing more local produce. Through a renewed sense of connection to the food system, people will feel encouraged to eat healthier and reduce food waste because they now attribute more value to their food.

Cities themselves can become better places to live through the actions they take. Circular food systems can help make streets cleaner, improve air and water quality, reduce the risk of foodborne illness, and create new bioeconomic opportunities.

By reconnecting with the food system and integrating urban gardens, cities can become a more pleasant place to live. We would like to discuss this with you based on the inputs from UrbanRoots.

The event will be held in German and participation is on a donation basis.
